Checking Your Niche Ideas With Facebook

Facebook holds some hugely powerful tools for the niche marketer that make it one of THE TOP resources for niche research and analysis.

Where else can you go to be actually told how many people are actively interested in a niche market? But not only how many people but also how old they are, their gender, where they live and other related interests.

The key to this niche check test is finding how many people ‘Like’ each of your niche market ideas. If you find niche ideas with little or no interest then you should move on and consider something else. If your ideas have a lot of followers then you can keep them on your “potentials” list and check them with some of our other recommended checks.

Finding those with an active interest in any market is easy if you use Facebook Ads. The good news is that you can use the Facebook Ads tools without having to spend any money and you can get the results you need really quickly and easily.




Here’s how to use Facebook for your niche analysis.

Step 1 – First Time Users – When you first want to use the Ads tool go to your normal Facebook wall page. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you’ll see the words ‘Create Advert’ as shown in the image below. Just click on that phrase to start your Facebook Check. If you’ve got loads of Facebook Friends and the page keeps reloading with more wall posts just hit the ‘END’ key on your keyboard and it will give you the bottom of the page with enough time to click on ‘Create Advert’

If you’ve already done some advertising on Facebook you’ll have the ‘Create Advert’ button in several places over your wall so just click one of those and continue with the following steps.

Step 2 – Once you reach the advertising page just click on the green button labeled ‘Create an Ad’ as shown in the image below.

Step 3 – As you want to get to the niche research tool and not actually create an ad just fill in the box with any url as shown in the illustration below.

  • To make it even easier I just put in Google’s url in the URL box to get the boxes filled quickly (www.google.com).
  • Once you’ve put in Google’s URL (or any you choose) just hit your enter/return key.

Just scroll down the page from the advert details and you will find Facebook’s targeting tool which is your key to unlimited niche research!

As you will see from the image, Facebook targeting lets you assess ANY niche idea you can think of based on:

  • Location by country, state or city
  • Age range or Exact Age
  • Gender
  • General or Specific Interests

And this is the bit you can play around with and experiment with as much as you like to find the niche market characteristics with the most potential customers. You don’t need to go anywhere near the ‘Campaign, Price and Schedule’ part of the page.

This Facebook Ad targeting tool is immensely powerful as Facebook collects all those ‘like’ button presses Facebook users have clicked and shares with you the number of people who are actively interested on a day to day basis in the market you are researching.

It’s NOT just the likes people have put on their wall but everything people have liked.

When you use this tool for Niche Analysis of any of your ideas you should always use the following categories that we’ve completed here for ‘Bass Fishing’

  • Country: United States
  • Age: 18 to no max
  • Gender: All
  • Precise Interests: Bass Fishing

Facebook will then very helpfully give you more suggestions to consider. Markets like ‘Kayak Fishing’ in our example.

Using this tool for our example we can see exactly how many Facebook users there are over the age of 18 in the USA who like Bass Fishing – over 1 million people. And remember these are people who are actively clicking ‘Like’ buttons on posts, videos, shared links and images that are about Bass Fishing.

When I analyzed a selection of our potential niche markets using the basic Facebook Ad tool these results emerged:

 Aromatherapy    62,000 Likes 
 Chocolate Chip Cookies     8,600,000 Likes   
 Vegan Shoes  400 Likes   
 Crochet     635,000 Likes   

Niche Results Analysis

Using our long run niche analysis benchmarks the results from our test niches using Facebook’s Ad Tool generated these conclusions:

Based on these Facebook results Chocolate Chip Cookies is looking a strong contender to take further while Crochet also has good levels of interest.

If we used Facebook likes alone then Vegan Shoes would be a non starter so we will have to carefully review how this idea fares using the other niche analysis indicators.
